Kent had Stevens and White as given men. RM has many differences including one huge one (Hants (1) Nyren 7 not 70, total 177 not 241) but other newspapers confirm the score as given. (Variant) The diarist Richard Hayes reports that Dorset opened the bowling with a maiden ‘but soon hitting began’ and goes on to say that Dorset took two good catches. LEP reports that Dorset took three catches, but surviving versions of the score show only one. It is possible that Aylward and Small ought to be ‘c Dorset’ rather than ‘b Dorset’, but in view of the uncertainty the score has been left unaltered. 55
