Abbreviations and Sources Listed below are the main sources referred to for each match. Books (with page number) are shown first, followed by newspapers and other sources. Bentley has unnumbered pages. It is not the case that all sources listed agree entirely with the printed score – where sources differ, they have been considered in the light of the ground rules set out in the Preface in order to determine the ‘best’ version of the score. Some newspapers were published every three or four days, and a particular issue may be dated, for example, 18th to 22nd July. In the list that follows, only the first date has been given. This will explain, in some cases, why the full score of a match appears in a newspaper dated earlier than the conclusion of that match.
