Great Cricket Matches 1772-1800

Match in 1802 The score on the facing page came to light after the ACS had completed its initial classification of 'important' cricket matches in the period 1801-1863, but it clearly merits inclusion and this was formally ratified by the Association in March 2010. Consequently it should included in lists of 'important' matches and in the career figures for the players concerned. It appeared in the Cricket Statistician for Spring 2006 (where the date was incorrectly given as 1805), accompanied by an article by Keith Warsop. This is, however, believed to be its first publication in book form since its original appearance in Britcher. At the same time as this match was added to the list of 'important' games, the ACS agreed to delete the match on 26 August 1803 at Rickmansworth between Mr H.C.Woolridge's XI and Hon W.R.Capel's XI. Further research has shown that a very high proportion of the players involved in the 1803 game were drawn from the Rickmansworth Club and in view of this the overall quality of the match does not justify 'important' status. It should also be mentioned, for the avoidance of doubt, that the supposed match on 20-22 April 1842 at Cambridge between Cambridge Town and Cambridge University has been conclusively proved to be a hoax and should be deleted from the list of 'important' games. 282
