The ‘Lost’ Great Matches This list of eleven “lost” great matches (i.e., for which full scores have not been found) is restricted to those played between 1772 and 1800, the period covered by this book. Obviously, there were many such matches played before 1772 but these are not taken into account here. Also omitted are matches which were announced but for which no evidence has been found to prove they took place. All of the games included here have been authenticated from reliable sources and all of the them could be classified as “great” under the ACS criteria. HAMPSHIRE v KENT Played at Broad Halfpenny Down, Hambledon, August 10, 11, 1772. Hampshire won by 50 runs. HAMPSHIRE v KENT Played at Merrow Down, Guildford, August 26, 27, 1772. Kent won by an innings and 29 runs. The Duke of Dorset scored 21 for Kent. SURREY v HAMPSHIRE Played at Merrow Down, Guildford, August 28, 29, 1772. Hampshire won by 45 runs. ENGLAND v HAMPSHIRE Played at Laleham Burway Cricket Ground, July 12, 13, 1773. England won by 114 runs. SURREY v KENT Played at Laleham Burway Cricket Ground, August 9, 10, 1773. Surrey won by eight wickets. Kent had two (unidentified) given men. HAMPSHIRE v KENT Played at Broad Halfpenny Down, Hambledon, July 13, 14, 1774. Hampshire won by ten wickets.
