Bowling O M R W O M R W Cumberland 5 3 Walker 2 Taylor 2 Old Etonians Bowling O M R W O M R W Purchase 3 Bullen 1 3 Fitzroy 3 Umpires: Close of Play: 1st day: . Old Etonians had ‘Brown’, Bullen, Graham and Purchase as given men; MCC had Goldham, Taylor, Towell and Walker. Obviously the given men would not have batted last, as shown, but no source gives a more convincing order. The identity of ‘Brown’ is uncertain. W.Browning of East Malling appears sometimes as Brown but does not seem a likely candidate to have been engaged as a given man and the appearance has therefore been assigned to W.Beeston, who is known to have used Brown as an alias. 155
