Close of Play: 1st day: N to Z (1) 150-6 (Wells 34*, J.Small, sen 44*); 2nd day: N to Z (1) 163-8 (J.Small, jun 9*, Fennex 3*); 3rd day: N to Z (2) 177 all out. G.T.Boult was a full substitute for A to M, replacing C.Lennox (presumably unable to play when the match was resumed on day 3). A to M had Taylor as a given man; N to Z had Aylward as a given man. Fennex played for N to Z because his name was understood to be a corruption of ‘Phœnix’. Day 2 was ruined by rain so the match had to be completed some days later. The changes to second-innings batting orders may be in order of dismissal; it is unlikely that Wells batted last in N-Z (2), but he may well have been last out. 124
