Middlesex had two of Berkshire and one of Kent as given men; Essex had two given men. Z.Boult (1) and W.Bedster (2) are shown as PO Clark. ‘PO’, i.e. put out, is taken to mean stumped. Clark has a stumping in 1789 (Hornchurch v MCC, 6 August 1789), so he is known to have kept wicket. SB has ‘Davies’, otherwise unknown, in the Essex team: this is assumed to be Davidson, who appeared for Hornchurch in the previous match and in the ‘lost’ match on 2 August. Only one day is given but the scoring suggests that the match must have continued into at least a second day. 102
