The teams are not in batting order. This match was the first of three between a combined WCC/Moulsey team and Hornchurch. This game probably presents more difficulties than any other single ‘great’ match. Its venue has been given above as Hornchurch but this is open to considerable doubt: in addition, there are several problems with player identification. These issues are discussed in more detail in the Supplementary Note for this match on page 276. (Variant) SB gives this and the second match as Moulsey Hurst games but the composition of the team shows that it was WCC and Moulsey Hurst jointly, and this is confirmed by press announcements for the third match at Hornchurch on 2 August (for which the full score has unfortunately not survived). 101
