Leicestershire-Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire-Somerset had become established before the 1914-18 war. Now they were joined by Derbyshire-Warwickshire, Essex-Worcestershire, Hampshire-Kent and Middlesex-Sussex in what would become cornerstones of the season. There were to be occasional variations. Combinations of Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent and Somerset changed the menu in half-a-dozen years between the wars and the old Warwickshire-Worcestershire rivalry was restored in 1936 and 1937 when Derbyshire met Essex for a couple of years.
