amounted to an eight year trial but by then his hopes of a prolonged Test career as the heir-apparent to Statham and Trueman had been dashed. Leicestershire fell foul of Jackson (13 for 73) in the 1962 Whitsuntide game at Derby and were beaten by 165 runs despite a fine hundred from Watson. The Midlands’ holiday merry-go-round had now begun in earnest, with Warwickshire back as Derbyshire’s opponents in 1963 and winning both (Smith 144 not out at Derby in August) and Northamptonshire and Leicestershire sharing the spoils. In 1964 the pitch at the County Ground, Derby was turned east-west, spectators seated on the old racecourse grandstand terrace now having a view from behind the bowler’s arm. The first Championship match on the newly-aligned pitch was against Northamptonshire match during Whitsuntide, 16-19 May. This was the last full year of the traditional Bank Holidays, Derbyshire meeting Northamptonshire, Essex-Warwickshire and Leicestershire-Worcestershire. The old order was changing.
