AbouT THE AuTHoR Keith Walmsley is a retired chartered town planner, born in Middlesex but resident for over 40 years in Reading - and still wondering how in 1981 he failed to attend the one and only first-class match ever played in the town. An enthusiastic but incompetent player, he took early refuge in the facts and figures of the game. He has been a member of the AcS since the mid- 1970s, and Statistical officer of The cricket Society since 1996, in succession to the late Derek Lodge. His previous publications have included three editions of Mosts Without in Test cricket, the AcS Famous cricketers volume on long-time hero clem Hill, and the Lives in cricket volume brief candles. The recent frustrations caused by supporting QPR have not broken him completely, and he continues to play the cello in the Reading Symphony orchestra.
