Cricket's Historians

Historians Dig Deeper outside the British Isles. The reason behind the publication has been the gradual ceasing of national annuals, in particular India, West Indies and Australia. John Bryant, who is a member of the Committee of the ACS, was born in Waltham Abbey in 1956, educated at Goff ’s School, Cheshunt and is a Policy Leader for the National Housing Federation. Bryant was editor of a book of ‘Great’ matches played in England between 1772 and 1800, published by the ACS in 2011. A panel of researchers, led by Martin Wilson and Keith Warsop checked the scores published in Haygarth’s Scores & Biographies and other earlier sources, against contemporary press details. This checking revealed a remarkable number of changes to the ‘accepted’ versions of the scores and was a work of major importance. PhilipPaine has been a frequent contributor to cricket magazines, though his name is chiefly associated with a set of volumes detailing the final resting places of cricketers. He has combed numerous graveyards working on this self imposed task. He also did valuable work on establishing the history and location of the Montpelier Ground in what is now South London. With cricketing publications of an ever more diverse nature being researched and published, it has been impossible within the limited scope of this book to include every work on cricket’s history and statistics. As was noted in the initial Introduction, the three Bibliographies are the ideal source for readers who wish to delve further into the subject. 297
