Cricket's Historians
The Pioneers of Cricket’s History and Statistics Before closing this Chapter the dramatic change in the newspaper industry during the 1850s requires a passing note. In 1855 the Stamp Act was repealed and in September that year the first one penny daily newspaper was launched – Daily Telegraph – in 1859 a rival to Bell’s Life was established, namely Sporting Life , but initially the latter was, in cricketing terms, not up to the standard of the former. The only effect of the dailies was probably the demise of Fred Lillywhite’s postal service of daily score cards from major match venues. 28
