174 Rowland Bowen causes Ripples for Rosenwater’s column and ‘At The Sign of The Wicket’ (another Ashley- Cooper title) by Rowland Bowen. Would the wildly enthusiastic amateur (Bowen) be able to work in conjunction with the dedicated professionalism of Rosenwater? In the first issue of The Journal of The Cricket Society no articles by Bowen appeared. The two principal pieces were J.D.Coldham’s ‘Northamptonshire v Yorkshire At The Wicket’ which consumed 12 of the 64 pages and ‘Index to The Cricketer’ Part One by H.A.Cohen (also 12 pages). Five pages were given to The Society’s Winter Lunch. Rosenwater himself provided a short essay on ‘Throwing’. In July 1961, a few months after the launch of the Journal , Rosenwater organised and managed Stuart Surridge’s team’s tour of Bermuda. This would seem to indicate that he had left the legal profession in favour of cricket, and at the same time progressively strengthened his links with The Cricketer. In August 1965 The Cricket Society announced: ‘Due to business pressure, Irving Rosenwater is giving up his post as Editor of the Journal (of The Cricket Society), as he has been appointed to the staff of The Cricketer ’. Bowen severed his links with that magazine, his final article being in late 1962. The hackneyed phrase ‘he didn’t suffer fools gladly’ summed up the reason for his departure. In 1963 he launched and financed his own magazine The Cricket Quarterly . Bowen’s Introduction to the new publication begins: ‘Nature abhors a vacuum and that, perhaps, is why fools rush in where angels fear to tread. It now appears that there is a very real and pressing need for a publication to deal with the more serious aspects of cricket’s past as well as to chronicle, as a matter of record, some of the more interesting and worth-while facts about cricket below its top level. ‘It has always been a feature of cricket writing, apart from topical events, that the best, as well as the most valuable, research has been produced by those who regard it as a
