He bowled left-arm slow to medium pace. Swinging and spinning the ball, he could be irresistible when conditions favoured him. He was also an attacking left-hand batsman, twice scoring 1,000 runs in a season. Drake made his county debut in 1909 at a time when Yorkshire needed to plan for the future. George Hirst and Schofield Haigh were nearing 40, and it was hoped that Drake and Major Booth in particular would help form the nucleus of the next Championship-winning team. A forward, Drake was also a talented footballer, notably for Sheffield United, but he also came down south to play for Queen’s Park Rangers. It appears however that he gave up the professional game when his cricket career began to take off. His bowling continued to develop and in 1914 he took 158 wickets, a total only exceeded that season by Colin Blythe and Hampshire’s Alex Kennedy. Just over a month before the Weston match he performed another rare feat, taking 4 wickets in 4 balls against Derbyshire at Chesterfield. Clarence Park was staging its first cricket festival.
