Tossing the ball high into the air, his clever flighting of the ball at a time when slow bowlers often bowled with a long on and long off lured many batsmen to their doom. In the fashion of the time as a slow bowler he usually opened the attack. Born in 1864 in Kidderminster Tyler played for his home county Worcestershire before joining the Somerset groundstaff, playing for Taunton while qualifying. He quickly established himself as a mainstay of the side and his bowling contributed greatly to Somerset’s elevation to first-class status in 1891. Tyler was calmly impervious to punishment. He had to be: in July 1895 he was the first bowler to concede 200 runs in a Championship innings when he took five for 215 against Essex, and in his next match he took one for 212 whilst Archie MacLaren made 424 for Lancashire.
