However, he took 529 wickets for Middlesex, a total which at the time he played his last match for them at the end of 1893 was easily a county record. A hardworking and accurate right-arm slow bowler with a round-arm action, Burton was the mainstay of the Middlesex attack during the 1880s, and was their leading wicket-taker in every season bar one from 1881 to 1890. Burton was born in Hampstead, Middlesex in 1851. By trade a coachsmith, even when he became a Middlesex regular he often worked for several hours before taking the field. Unusually he did not make his first-class debut until he was 30, having played club cricket in north London. A photograph taken in 1878 shows that he sported a beard of which W.G. Grace would have been proud. His first match was at the end of May 1881 against Surrey at Lord’s. Opening the bowling, with his second ball he had Harry Jupp caught. It was a considerable scalp. Jupp scored England’s first Test fifty and was coming to the end of a career that left him Surrey’s top
