He waited a while to become the first West Indian to take all-ten. Having made his debut for Barbados in 1991, it came 16 years later, just two months before the end of a 177-match first-class career which yielded 659 wickets (to which should be added 310 List A victims). 2007 was quite a swansong. He took a Durham record 80 first-class wickets in a season and scored 578 runs. In the Friends Provident Trophy nobody exceeded his 22 wickets. No wonder his Wisden Cricketer of the Year citation referred to him as ‘the greatest single force in county cricket’, and he was named the Professional Cricketers’ Association Player of the Year. Quite a comeback after having been dropped for Durham’s third Championship match!
