Mohanty made his first-class debut as a 20-year-old at the end of 1996. With nine wickets against Bengal, the eventual winners of the Ranji Trophy East Zone group, his impact was immediate. His prospects were exciting and his Test debut followed just nine months later at Colombo (against a Sri Lanka side that had declared at 952 for six in the previous Test a week before!). With first innings figures of four for 78, including three top order batsmen, he again made an immediate impression. He was less successful in the second innings taking 0 for 72 in 16 overs as Sanath Jayasuriya and P.A.de Silva both made centuries. Three months later he played his next Test. Match figures of 35 overs nought for 89 against Sri Lanka however did not endear him to the selectors, and his second Test appearance was his last. Although his figures had been mixed, arguably he should perhaps have been given more chances to prove himself.
