He was another bowler whose all-ten had been preceded by a modest career record so far: 39 wickets in 16 matches and best figures of four for 37. A reliable medium- fast bowler relying on accuracy and movement in the air, he was still only just 20 and recently out of Rahula College, Matara. However, he had played for Sri Lanka Under-19s, been a member of a young Sri Lankan side that had toured England in 1990, and on return had played in a one-day international against Bangladesh. Domestic matches in Sri Lanka had only been ruled as first-class by the Sri Lankan Board three years previously.
