Most of his South African career was spent playing for his home province but he had two spells in English county cricket during the 1980s, in both of which his fast-medium left-arm bowling met with only limited success. Three years after his debut he was the second highest wicket-taker in South Africa in 1981/82, his 52 wickets beaten only by the 75 taken by Natal’s exceptional Vintcent van der Bijl. For his performance the South African Cricket Annual made him one of its Cricketers of the Year. Three seasons at Lancashire followed and at first things looked promising. However his appearances were restricted by injury, and because of the regulations in force at the time he couldn’t play when Clive Lloyd was available. Nevertheless his impressive bowling added much-needed penetration to the county attack. Unfortunately, although he batted usefully in the next two seasons, his bowling disappointed and the county released him.
