Beginning as a medium pacer, he eventually found success as an off-spinner who, with a lively, orthodox action, could deceive batsmen both in the air and off the pitch. His comfortable build did not prevent him having a 518-match career that lasted 29 years. To this substantial output would be added almost as many limited-overs matches. His breakthrough came in 1974, eighty-four wickets and 645 runs earning him his county cap. After a couple more good seasons his performances waned and in 1979, his attributes not always appreciated at Edgbaston, he moved to Trent Bridge. Two years later he was a key member of a County Championship-winning side, and the summer after that he was a Test cricketer, initially getting his chance because John Emburey had been banned for going on a rebel South African tour. Hemmings’ final Test figures in 16 matches, spread over nine years, were fairly modest, 43 wickets and 383 runs. However, his career was not without interest.
