And again it was Victoria who were on the receiving end, with seven Victorians on both buses. Western Australia had won the Shield at their first attempt in 1947/48, albeit that they only played each of the other States once (and had to guarantee the eastern States the return rail fares to Perth!). They eventually started playing all the States twice, home and away, in 1956/57, but it wasn’t until 1967/68 under the inspiring leadership of new captain Tony Lock that they won the Shield again. Victoria, the previous year’s winners, would finish in second place, and so matches between the two States had a particular importance that season.
