Tall and strong with great stamina, he bowled outswingers at a lively fast-medium. Allan was born in Brisbane on New Year’s Eve 1935. On the same day, in faraway Launceston, future captain of Australia Ian Johnson was one of nine Victorians making their first-class debuts against Tasmania. Allan made his own debut in 1959/60, playing three matches for Queensland, but then work took him to Melbourne for three years where, although he made the State squad, he could not break into the first team. Returning home to take up a position with tobacco company WD & HO Wills (although he was a non-smoker!), he reappeared for Queensland.
