Just over six feet tall, Staffordshire-born Ian Thomson made his Sussex debut in 1952 at the age of 23 and, after taking 101 wickets in the following season, remained the backbone of his county’s attack for over a decade. From a high delivery, following a rather shuffling approach to the stumps, he bowled a sharp inswinger and on occasions a telling leg cutter. Warwickshire came to Worthing at the top of the Championship table, level on points with neighbours Worcestershire. By the end of the season the neighbours would be on the top of the pile, leaving Warwickshire with the consolation that second place was their best effort since they won the title in 1951.
