205 Ken Smales Smales retired after the 1958 season with a final career total of 389 wickets at 31 runs each, to become assistant secretary of Nottingham Forest Football Club (FA cup-winners in 1959), although he continued to play club cricket. Wisden described his retirement as a severe loss. Eventually serving Forest for over 35 years, he would become full-time secretary three years later, a position he held during the club’s great years under manager Brian Clough. He put his signature to many famous transfers including that of Trevor Francis, Britain’s first million pound footballer. In 1991 he published a club history Forest: the first 125 years . He also ran a fascinating website about the club’s history. He died in Cornwall in 2015.
