A shrewd, competitive cricketer, he always contributed, whether winning a match with his fast-medium bowling, saving it with his slow-medium batting or turning it with a brilliant catch. Born in 1923 in Westcliff-on-Sea, Bailey came to notice during the War playing for Dulwich College and when first-class cricket restarted was soon in the Essex side as well as getting his Blue at Cambridge. For ten years from 1949 Bailey was more or less a regular in the England side (although curiously in 61 Tests he never played against India). He played a major role in England’s 1950s pre-eminence and would become, after Wilfred Rhodes, the second player to score 2,000 runs and take 100 wickets for them. Because of the role he had to play for England, Bailey is often remembered as an ultra-defensive batsman, but to be fair to him he had begun his career as an attractive strokemaker.
