A wholehearted bowler who swung the ball away at a lively fast-medium, remarkably he had two separate county careers 12 years apart. Graveney was born in Hexham, Northumberland in 1924, two and a half years before famous brother Tom. His father died when they were young and the family followed their stepfather to Bristol. At the Grammar School Ken was a left-handed batting star (brother Tom fancied himself as a quick bowler!). After serving as a Royal Marine Commando during the War, and taking part in the Normandy landings, local cricket led to a successful trial with Gloucestershire and a first county career that lasted from 1947 to 1951. As a bonus Ken introduced Tom to the county. Gloucestershire finished seventh in the Championship in 1949, the performances of the two Graveneys and Arthur Milton promising well
