Short and broad-shouldered he was a doughty and skilful cricketer who began as a medium-fast bowler, switching to off spin after the War. He made steady progress and the first of eight Test caps came against Warwick Armstrong’s Australians in 1921. After the War Northamptonshire needed to appoint a paid secretary for the first time. Jupp (still then with Sussex and having switched from professional to amateur) got the job. It was a good move all round: Jupp had an electrical goods business in Northampton, and the county got a very good cricketer. Jupp performed the double ten times, a total only exceeded by the great Yorkshire pair Hirst and Rhodes. And, for a variety of reasons, he missed four full seasons when he might have increased that tally. Given that he spent most of his career playing for a desperately weak Northamptonshire side, it is an impressive record.
