2nd not 1st: Essex 1899-1914 (6th ed)

Snell, Herbert Wigram (b.1875) Born Witham, Essex, 13 January 1875. He probably died in the USA (see below). Herbert WJ Snell, who was born in Suffolk in 1876 and died there in 1961, is a different person. Played 1900. He was the one of the nine children of Alfred Snell, the vicar of Witham, and Maria Catherine Wigram. He attended Haileybury College and in 1901 was a gentleman farmer at Olives Farm, Witham. A migration record on Findmypast suggests that he migrated to Arapahoe County Colorado, presumably to farm, and was drafted into the United States army in 1917. His sister Anna Sophia Mary married the Reverend Charles Gough Littlehales, who played for Essex when his clerical duties permitted. Snell played two matches in 1900. Against Surrey at Leyton he scored 39, and against Hampshire at May’s Bounty he scored 12 and took two catches. The professionals dominated the bowling in both matches and he did not get the chance to bowl. Batting and fielding record M I NO RUNS AVE 100s 50s CT ST Friendly 2 51 25.50 Highest score: 39. Snell, Nigel Eric Scotchburn (1889-1976) Born 18 January 1889, Wanstead, Essex Died 4 November 1976, Southend, Essex. Played 1910. He was the youngest son of Edward Scotchburn Snell, a metal merchant, and Elizabeth Geach Rowe. Both were originally from Liskeard in Cornwall, although they married in London. They lived for many years at Treverlyn, Cambridge Park, Wanstead. If Herbert Wigram Snell and Nigel Scotchburn Snell were related, it was very distantly. Snell was an insurance clerk in 1911 and a manager in 1915 but had retired by the time he was 50. Several newspaper reports suggest that he was a talented amateur singer in a musical family. He was a reservist in the 12 th London Regiment and enlisted in 1915 as a rifleman. In 1919 he married Lilian Laing from Newcastle-on-Tyne, where he was stationed for a while during the war, and they had children Lilian and Patrick. They lived at various places in Wanstead and later in Westcliff. He died in 1976 leaving £3582. In 1909-11 Snell played for Wanstead in a series of matches against MCC but by 1915 was playing against Wanstead for Ilford. His batting average for Essex is unlikely ever to be exceeded by anyone playing for the county, because in his sole innings he scored 77. It was in the 2nd XI match against Cheshire at Witham in 1914, and he probably shared a match-winning fifth wicket partnership with Charles Stewart Richardson, who was Essex chairman from 1928 to 1945.
