2nd not 1st: Essex 1899-1914 (6th ed)

In 1890 at Paddington Charles Knight married Lyllie Rowe, who was born in India. They had children Charles Stanley, Raymond, Norman Leslie, Hugh and Alice Kathleen. In 1891 he was employed as a marine underwriter but by 1901 he had set up on his own and in 1911 he was employing others as a Lloyds underwriter and insurance broker. The family lived initially in Tottenham but in 1892 moved to a new house called Sunnyholme in Nazeing, west Essex. This happens to be where I live and I know the house (now Snaresbrook House) well. Nazeing had been a remote rural parish but it was beginning to open up and Knight was among the first to commute from the village. Sunnyholme was one of a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1892. This is the other one, Poona Lawn, in the 1920s. Sunnyholme was similar except that it lacked the outbuildings. In 1898 Knight made a sole appearance for Hertfordshire, against Norfolk at Lakenham where he scored 2 and 26. Nazeing is on the county border with Hertfordshire and he may well have played for one of the stronger clubs there. In 1900 Knight was selected for Essex’s match against Middlesex at Lord’s but it was washed out before Essex could bat. His best match was on ‘a capital wicket’ at Leyton against Middlesex, when he scored 21 opening with Johnny Douglas and held a catch. Then he managed to get to the crease at Lord’s but made a duck in his only innings. In 1902 he moved to Banstead in Surrey and played no more cricket for Essex.
