Cricket 1892

26 8 CBICKET: A WEEKLY BECOBD OF THE GAME. JULY 7, 1892 DUBLIN UNIVERSITY v. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. After three days of interesting cricket, this match ended yesterday at Dublin in a win for Cambridge. It was the first time the Universities had met, and the result of the visit of the Cambridge team should do good in more ways than one. Though the Dublin captain lost the toss, Jaekson, fancying that the batting side would have the worst of the wicket after Sunday’s rain, decided to take the field. As it happened, however, the ground was never difficult, and the Irishmen were in all day for 254. Of these the captain, Meldon, and John son contributed 146. The former hit in fine style, and his 97 was only marred by two chances, the second just bofore ho was out. On Tuesday the early batsmen of Cambridge showed to such ad vantage that the Bcoro was 207 at luncheon, with only foui batsmen out. After this camo a collapse, and only 73 were added, of which the last two batsmen, Bill and Bromley-Davenport, made 40. Though Dublin were in a minority of 26 runs when they began their second innings, Browning and Johnson played such excellent cricket, that on Tuesday evening the Irishmen were 80 on with eight wickets in hand. Yesterday Johnson added 27, but the other batsmen could do nothing against the slow bowling of Wells, and the eight remaining wickets only added 59 runs. Of these Wells took six, his seven altogether only cost ing 31 runs. Left with 140to win, Cambridge made light of the task, and as the runs wore got for the loss of four batsmen, they were left with an easy victory by six wickets. D u b l in U n iv e r s it y . LEICESTERSHIRE. After having all the worst of the first innings in his match, begun at Derby on Monday, the Derbyshire eleven played up so pluckily that a probable defeat was turned into a creditablo victory. Leicestershire, who went in first, made -32, in which there were five doublo figures. The Jeatjm* of the innings, though, was the batting of the Captain, who was in an hour and a quarter for a faultless 64. At the end of the first day Derby shire had lost four good wickets for 71 . and as the six remaining wickets on Tuesday only added 46 they had to follow on in a minority of 115. This time the batting was of a very different character, and though Sugg was soon dismissed, by the end of the day 269 had been scored, Mr. Evershed and Davidson, who were both not out, having added 126 runs. Yesterday the two batsmen continued to score freely, and 51 were added before the amateur was caught and bowled for a brilliant score of 119. Davidson also got into three figures before he was bowled, and ultimately the innings was closed with the total 423 for seven wickets. Leicestershire had to go in after lunch with 309 to win. The only hope was a draw, but Hulme, Davidson and Porter, the first named in particu lar, bowled so well that this was not realised. The side were all out in fact for 98, so that Derbyshire gained an exceedingly credit able victory by 210 runs. In the last innings Hulmc had an extraordinary analysis, taking five wickets for three runs. L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . First Innings. Mr. C. E.
