Though Gloucestershire commenced their first match of the season against Middlesex with a creditable score of 244, at Lord’s, on Thursday last, this did not save them from a decisive defeat by an innings and 102 runs. Each County had the same eleven as in the earlier part of the week, when Middlesex defeated Somerset, and Gloucestershire Kent. Gloucestershire won the toss, and batted first on a capital wicket. Dr. E. M. Grace failed to score, but W. G. and Mr. Radcliffe took the score to 107, before W.G., like his brother, was caught at the wicket. His score was 47, but he gave a couple of chances early in his innings—one before he had scored. Mr. Radcliffe was out next—at 153—for a fine innings of 82 . He had batted for two hours and a quarter without giving a chance. He hit ten 4’s and five 3's. After his dismissal, there was little worthy of note in the batting, and though Murch hit up 25 rapidly, the innings closed for 214. Middlesex lost MessrB. Webbe and Stoddart on Thursday evening, and when stumps were drawn the total was 101—Mr. Scott (not out) 36, Mr. Nepean (not out) 39. On Friday, the latter only added 5 runs to his score, and Mr. O’Brien was quickly dismissed. Rawlin joined Mr. Scott, and the latter was missed at mid-on by Roberts with his score 47. This mistake had a very serious effect on the game. Both batsmen played the opposing bowlers with the greatest freedom, aud in two hours added 160 runs. Rawlin’s 64 was made without a fault, and included seven 4’s. Mr. Henery and Phillips, too, gave Mr. Scott useful assistance, the professional's 52 being a merry innings. Mr. Scott was out last—‘■owled by Woof—for a magnificent innings of 224. He was hatting altogether for six hours and forty minutes, and played splendid cricket from beginning to end of his innings, despite the heat, which on Friday was intense. Besides the chance just referred to, he ought to have been caught by Roberts again at mid-on, with his score at 137. Despite these two faults, the performance was a great one. His hits were twenty seven 4’s, four 3’s, fifteen 2’s and 74 singles. Gloucestershire went in a second time in a minority of 279 runs, and in the forty minutes which remtined for play on Friday, lost Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Sainsbury, and Woof for 21 runs. Tho two not outs—Mr. Kitcat and Roberts — were quickly dismissed on Saturday, but the brothers Gracc look the score from 48 to 95, when E.M. was bowled by Kawlin. Murch again again hit out freely, but the others did not render their captain much assistance, and the innings closed for 177. W.G. hatted in quite his best form for two hours and a qu trter, and took out his bat for a faultless 72. Philips bowled with great success, his five wickets costing le js than 7 runs each.
