Cricket 1890

MAY 8, 1890. CRICKET A WEEKLY EECORD OF THE GAME, 99 THE FRESHMEN’S MATCH. Particular interest was centred in the opening match of the Cambridge season this year. On paper the University Captain appeared to have an unusually large choice of promising Freshmen, and so many were the likely aspirants that it was decided to play thirteen on each side, with Messrs. Woods and McGregor as the respective captains. Rain delayed the commencement of the match on Monday till one o’clock, and Mr. Woods’ team, when they went in, were dismissed for a total of 147. Just one half of these were contri buted by Messrs. Hill, of Marlborough, and Streatfeild, of Charterhouse, both of whom showed very promising cricket. Messrs. Studd, of Eton, Nicholls, of Rugby, and Jephson, the young Surrey cricketer, were the most successful bowlers. Messrs. Douglas, the Captain of the Dulwich College Eleven of 1888, and Fryer made a capital start for Mr. McGregor’s side, and the former’s 37 was par ticularly good play. At the end of the first day they had made 77 for three wickets, and this number, mainly through the excellent batting of last year’s Harrow captain, and the vigorous hitting of Mr. McGregor at the close, was increased to 247 before the last wicket fell. In their second innings Mr. Woods’ side only fared moderately well, and when the twelfth wicket fell the total was 155, or only 78 runs on. Follow ing the example of the other captain, however, Mr. Woods helped to make a de termined stand, and the last wicket added no les3 than 64 runs. Left with 143 to win, at one time Mr. McGregor’s side looked like winning easily, so well did Messrs. Studd and Stubbs bat. The tail, though, failed signally, and as the last five wickets did nothing, the match, in the absence of the captain, produced a most exciting finish, ending in a tie. M r . S. M. J.
